To PD or not to PD, that is the question… (Hint: the answer is always YES!)

More often than not, organisations get caught up in the day to day operations of their businesses and sometimes don’t always allow enough time to grow and enhance their employee’s knowledge and skills or discuss business growth strategies. Our Fearless Leader, Kelly Maniatis, refers to this as time spent working ON the business, rather than IN the business. Luckily for us, at Left Field, we have an empowering manager who takes the time to invest in us, her team, not just as employees but as people.

Within the last week, the whole team have been provided with multiple, wonderful, opportunities to grow our skills through various professional development activities.

Last Friday, we spent time as a team working on our “Left Field Legacy”. Kelly wanted to put an emphasis that this Legacy should represent us personally as well as professionally in our role at Left Field. What an inspiring and empowering thing it is as an employee to be on the receiving end of a manager who not only appreciates what you do in your role within the company, but who appreciates and wants to build upon your skills as a person!

On Monday, we were privileged enough to go to the Di Bella Coffee Headquarters and have a special session with just our team and Phil Di Bella himself. He spoke to us about how he has grown Di Bella Coffee and the importance of customer service. Almost too fittingly, part of Phil’s presentation dovetailed into our “Legacy” session last Friday. Phil was emphasising the strong relationship, connection and trust he has with his team and how he built this by investing in their ‘personal brand’, not just by their on-the-job skills. By investing in each person’s individual unique skillsets and personal brand, it means they are more invested in the business because they feel appreciated and they are getting utilised to their full potential.

What a perfect way to set up the events that followed this week. On Tuesday night, I was able to attend a wonderful event hosted by Brisbane Marketing / Digital Brisbane all about Online Marketing Strategy. As Team Coordinator at Left Field, I look after lots of different aspects of the business while the team are out delivering empowering workshops and creating 21st Century Leaders. One of the things that is new to my role that Kelly identified as a way to help me simultaneously grow my own ‘personal brand’ as well as the company, was to develop an official Left Field Marketing Strategy. By having Kelly invest in my attendance at this event filled me with such excitement and pride to represent Left Field!

As if the week wasn’t already full of enough inspiration, the consulting team were invited to a breakfast hosted by Peter Berry Consulting and Hogan Assessments. On Thursday morning, Eleni, Jess and Alex journeyed from leafy Graceville to the very swank Stamford Plaza and attended a presentation from the charismatic Dr Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic (Professor and Hogan CEO). The new and exciting developments in Hogan’s leadership philosophy created some lightbulb moments for the team and they came back to the office with a pep in their step!

By having a leader like Kelly invest the time for the team to attend Professional Development opportunities like this is just one way that Left Field is set apart from other businesses. One of the things that really stands out to me about “The Left Field Difference” is that, through the embodiment of Kelly’s attitude and actions, we really do practice what we preach. Every day, through every interaction we have with our clients, we are working to grow, develop and foster 21st Century leaders and workplaces. All the while, Left Field is also growing and adapting as a workplace of the 21st Century.
